Northern Soul Grilled Cheese, Manchester: new menu | Review

Northern Soul Grilled Cheese has been busy ever since it opened in Church Street Market (up the road from Afflecks and a stone’s throw from the Arndale market) early in 2016, but it seems to have been even busier since Adam Richman (of Man v. Food) made an appearance there this July.

July saw an updated menu, too. Keeping things simple, Northern Soul sell a range of grilled cheese sandwiches, mac n cheese, and nachos costing from £4.50 to £6.50.

This time around, we tried the Soul, their classic with a secret three cheese blend. This grilled sandwich is perfection. Crisp and golden on the outside, loaded with tasty gooey cheese in the middle and served with a side of pickle and slaw. This is grilled cheese at its  very best. We also had the Classic (the soul with onion chutney) that was good but was slightly overloaded with pickle when we got to the centre that made it too sweet.

We missed the Patty Melt (pictured below) that we’d had on a previous visit but we’re always willing to give something new a go. The salt n pepper chicken was mostly delicious, loaded with cheese and succulent chicken but the breadcrumb coating on the chicken had gone soggy during grilling that let it down. The addition of salt ‘n’ pepper onions, green peppers, chilli and garlic was a welcome kick of sweet and spice that was well balanced.

To drink, there’s cans of Coke, San Pellegrino and bottles of root beer on offer, and the milkshakes look pretty damn good, too.

I love the atmosphere in here. The staff are chirpy and the unit is simple with room to sit (there’s usually as many people waiting for takeaway as there is waiting to sit down, so getting seated in time for your food arriving isn’t usually a problem) either at tables or on bar stools overlooking the grills, or the street. Food takes around 10-15 minutes during the busiest times of day and, overall, it’s well worth the wait.

Honestly, I like what they’re doing here. It’s quick soulful food at more than reasonable prices and I’ll be back to see if they’ve perfected the new items on the menu like they have the Soul, and to try the milkshakes!
